THINGS TO SEE AND DO
OVERVIEW
Berwick-upon-Tweed is the northernmost town in England approx. 2.5 miles from the Scottish border. It is situated at the mouth of the river Tweed and lies midway between the cities of Newcastle and Edinburgh, both of which are around 45 minutes away by train and 1 hour by car.
The town centre is completely surrounded by the Elizabethan walls, built around 1558, the only example of bastioned town walls in Britain and one of the best preserved examples in Europe. The walk round the walls has stunning views of the coastline, river and town.
Formerly a garrison town, Berwick has changed hands between Scotland and England no fewer than 13 times and is steeped in history.
One of best streets to visit is Bridge Street which can be found just over the river by crossing the Old Bridge. It boasts a selection of eating places, boutique shops and a Micro pub. It has seen much regeneration over the last few years but still retains many historical features.
Berwick has been the setting for film scenes, most recently The Outlaw King and the surrounding areas are popular for filming TV series such as Vera.
